Mill Creek Gabion Repair
to Culvet Retaining Wall
Client: Private
Date: October 2023
Value: $33,000
Description:
During several heavy rain events of Spring 2023, the existing stacked stone wall retaining a bridge to a private development subsided, pulling some of the driveway above with it.
Strata Civil installed silt controls, then removed the existing rock wall, replacing it with a 2m tall Gabion wall. The 2 sections of gabion wall were tied together across existing culvert by pouring an in-situ reinforced concrete headwall. Once constructed, the driveway above the wall was reinstated creating additional width to what was originally there.
Careful planning and execution of the project ensured no silt discharge down Mill Creek into Lake Hayes. The bottom 0.5m of the wall was constructed beneath the water level.
All materials were kept and re-used onsite. The stones from the old retaining walls were used to create a border around a nearby pond, while the same pond also received a clean up and some subsoil works to allow water to circulate properly and avoid becoming stagnant.
